Stupidity   July 24th, 2009

Inspired by and mostly cribbed from Truppenführung (Hammerstein-Equord, 1933)

A practical observation on the risks of stupidity was made by the German General Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord in Truppenführung, 1933: “I divide my officers into four classes; the clever, the lazy, the industrious, and the stupid. Each officer possesses at least two of these qualities. Those who are clever and industrious are fitted for the highest staff appointments. Use can be made of those who are stupid and lazy. The man who is clever and lazy however is for the very highest command; he has the temperament and nerves to deal with all situations. But whoever is stupid and industrious is a menace and must be removed immediately!”[6]

Where has the time gone?   July 2nd, 2009

July already?  2009 is half over!

Time flies when you’re having fun, they say, and lately it seems my life has been relativistically accelerating toward some notable fraction of c.  The thing is, however, that this doesn’t bother me at all.  I figure that sometime next week I’ll be 50 years old, sitting on the front porch with Marissa, some old dog, and a glass of weak lemonade and that’s just fine with me.  Maybe I’ll have some sort of walking stick that I can shake at kids as they pass in front of my house.

The rest of 2009 is going to be pretty full, as well.  Jim Gaffigan, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, the kids visiting in August, Paris, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and then 2010.  Wow!
